◆Your name?
~tafkae. It originally stood for "The Artist Formerly Known As Ed," which I was already calling myself before I stopped going as "Ed." The Ed in question was stolen from Cowboy Bebop, which in reality I have only seen a few episodes of. My real name is Lisa, but I keep running into duplicate Lisas online so I just go as Kae instead.
◆If possible, your age?
I will be twenty-two on the 23rd of this month.
◆When did you start drawing?
Oh, gosh, I don't remember. It must have been when I was really little, but I didn't get actually serious about it until around 7th grade when ~sotwnisey taught me how to do it anime style. However I pretty much continued to suck throughout high school and only started producing anything resembling "quality" after I'd taken some life drawing classes in college.
◆Which hand do you use for drawing?
My right hand, unless I'm feeling particularly masochistic. My left hand can't even hold a pencil correctly. It's kind of a useless appendage.
◆Which is easier to draw - male or female?
I think I have equal trouble with both nowadays. I used to be better at girls, but that was because I was trying to draw DBZ fanart and I couldn't get my head around the enormous muscles.
◆Which is easier to draw - long hair or short hair?
Long hair's easier, really. But it looks kind of samey on every character who has it, so I prefer short hair.
◆Is it easier to draw the head facing towards the right or the left?
Toward the left. I have often noticed a tremendous bias toward this in my sketchbook.
◆Is it easier to draw the side view of the face or the front view?
Side view's harder because I keep drawing them with collapsed jaws, but front view's harder because I'm never sure what to do with the nose. So they both have their disadvantages, really.
◆What do you have problems with in drawing?
Uhhhh well basically if you ask me to draw anything other than people, I can't do it. Animals, environments, buildings, plants, technology, cars, planets, maps, musical instruments........ Other than people, everything else is tremendously difficult for me. Sometimes I just fill in a blob where it should be and draw a line to it saying "GUITAR GOES HERE."
◆What do you like to draw?
Mmm, just different characters. Lately my sketchbook has more OCs than fanart in it, but...
◆Are you a traditional artist or a digital artist?
Neither, really. For traditional media I only use pencils, and digital is all I know how to use for coloring, but I still don't think I'm very good at that. Trying to paint in either format can only end in disaster and tears.
◆Where do you start drawing from?
Typically the shape of the head, which I then have to erase and redraw once I've done the face.
◆What is your drawing habit that you are aware of?
Since my hands are very unsteady, I draw with very short quick strokes. But this means that everything looks like a sketch unless I'm super careful and take many hours at it.
◆Any tips for coloring/shading?
Pfff, color is overrated.
◆How long does it take to finish a piece of art?
If it's just a sketch, then ten to twenty minutes. But for a really cleaned-up piece, or a comic, it can take much longer. A nice cleaned up comic takes me forever to do, which is one reason why my webcomics have all failed.
◆What music do you listen to while you draw?
Whatever comes up on Shuffle, but I wind up skipping half the songs usually. I should probably make some proper mixes, but I can't be arsed. Sometimes I listen to Pandora instead.
◆How long does it take you to come up with an idea?
If I'm actively trying to, I will never come up with anything. Ideas are fickle beasts, they just kind of come and go as they please.
◆Your favorite drawing utensils?
My mechanical pencil. ♥ It's great for linework, but I should probably get a wood pencil for shading.
◆Your favorite color/the color that you use a lot?
... Brown? My favorite color is green but for some reason I can't stand to use it in pictures.
◆Your favorite style(s)?
Ehh, well, I really like the look of watercolors, but I can't do the effect myself. I've also started trying to break from the "Oh, you draw that anime stuff" that has followed me around since I started, and put some cartoony fluidness into my work, you know? But I've had mixed results. orz
◆What kind of artist are you aiming for?
I'm not really aiming for anything, I just do this for fun.
◆Thank you.
